Husnee's appointment followed the resignation of Maafushi MP Hussain Riza Adam, also from the PNC, who stepped down from the commission on Sunday.

The Parliament on Monday appointed Manadhoo MP Husnee Mubarak from the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) as its representative to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

Husnee's appointment followed the resignation of Maafushi MP Hussain Riza Adam, also from the PNC, who stepped down from the commission on Sunday.

During Monday’s sitting, 58 members voted in favour of Husnee's appointment, with no votes cast against it. Husnee currently serves as the chair of the parliamentary Judiciary Committee.

Previously, JSC members who also sat on the Judiciary Committee did not take part in decisions concerning the removal of judges due to potential conflicts of interest.

Riza, who resigned from the JSC, had served as its chairperson. His resignation leaves the post of Commission President vacant.

High Court Justice Mohamed Niyaz, the Vice President of the JSC, resigned from that position last Tuesday, though he continues as a member of the commission. President Mohamed Muizzu’s representative, Yazmeed Mohamed, was elected Vice President of the JSC last Wednesday.

With the latest appointment, the commission now holds a majority from the ruling PNC, strengthening its influence within the JSC and the judiciary.

The current members of the Judicial Service Commission are:

  • President Mohamed Muizzu’s representative, Yazmeed Mohamed

  • Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla

  • Manadhoo MP Husnee Mubarak

  • Attorney General Ahmed Usham

  • Civil Service Commission President Mohamed Mujthaba

  • Idhrees Fawzee, public member appointed by Parliament

  • Ali Abdul Latheef, member elected by lawyers

  • Supreme Court Justice Hussain Shaheed

  • High Court Judge Mohamed Niyaz

  • Civil Court Judge Farhadh Rasheed
