Parliament on Wednesday appointed Holhudhoo MP Abdul Sattar as chair of the Judiciary Committee following changes prompted by the recent appointment of Manadhoo MP Hosni Mubarak to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
Husnee Mubarak was appointed as the parliament’s representative at the JSC after Maafushi MP Hussain Riza Adam resigned from both the commission and its presidency.
The Judiciary Committee met to elect new leadership after Hosni’s resignation as committee chair. During the meeting, members unanimously voted to elect Abdul Sattar as chair and PNC MP Mohamed Mamdooh as vice-chair.
Sattar’s nomination was proposed by Milandhoo MP Hassan Mufeed Abdul Ghadir and seconded by Mamdooh. Mufeed also proposed Mamdooh’s name for the position of vice-chair, seconded by MDP MP Mauroof Zakir.
According to parliamentary procedure, any member serving on both the Judiciary Committee and the JSC refrains from participating in JSC decisions concerning the removal of judges. If such a member is the chair of the committee, they are also required to step back from related proceedings to avoid conflicts of interest.
Both Hosni Mubarak and Abdul Sattar are lawyers by profession.
