A foreign national died and a Maldivian man was critically injured after a landing craft capsized near the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) area in Malé on Sunday morning.
Police said they received a report of the incident at 3:44 a.m. According to the statement, six people were taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for treatment — four Maldivians and two foreigners.
Authorities confirmed that there were 14 people on board the vessel, all of whom have been located. One of the injured, identified as Masud Hossain, a 32-year-old Bangladeshi national, died while receiving treatment at the hospital.
Police said a 25-year-old Maldivian man sustained serious injuries and remains in critical condition.
The incident follows similar accidents in recent months. Last month, three people were killed when a landing craft capsized near K. Eriyadu. In June last year, a soldier died when a landing craft sank while travelling from Malé to Lhaviyani Atoll.
Police are investigating Sunday’s incident.
