The area surrounding Jumhooree Maidhaan (Republic Square) has been closed again for ongoing road development and paving works on the north side of Malé City.

Authorities closed the area to public traffic from 8 p.m. on Monday, following a temporary reopening after an earlier closure late last month.

According to a police announcement on X (formerly Twitter), the closures include:

  • The north side of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, from the Shaheed Hussain Adam Building to Hussaini Street

  • Sections of Chaandhanee Magu and Jumhooree Higun between Boduthakurufaanu Magu and Ameer Ahmed Magu

  • The roads around the MTCC building, Kandi Dhonmanik Magu, and Mohamed Ismail Didi Magu

  • The southern section of Ibrahim Hassan Didi Magu, near the MMA building

The roadworks are part of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu widening and development project, which began in August.

Under the project, Boduthakurufaanu Magu is being expanded to four lanes along the city’s northern waterfront. The scope of work includes:

  • Tarring an 830-metre stretch of road between Henveiru Ferry Terminal and the Local Market

  • Constructing fences

  • Installing a new drainage system

  • Adding road markings and signage

  • Completing sheet piling along a 737-metre section

Authorities have not announced when the affected roads will reopen.
