Fuvahmulah Central MP Ali Fazad said on Sunday that the island’s supply water system had been neglected under the past two governments.
Speaking during the parliamentary debate on next year’s budget, Fazad raised concerns about the ongoing shortage of clean water in Fuvahmulah.
He said the water and sewerage project implemented during the previous PPM government had not been carried out in a manner that supported road development.
“The pipes were not laid with the intention of paving the roads,” he said, adding that water pipelines had been damaged due to road tarring.
Earlier in the day, Parliament rejected an emergency motion seeking to bring the water shortage to the government’s attention.
The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has stated that water supplied by Fenaka meets WHO drinking water standards. Fenaka, which provides water services on the island, said the recent disruption was caused by cross connections made by some customers.
Many residents, however, dispute this explanation and argue that the underlying problem lies in water production capacity.
