President Mohamed Muizzu on Friday urged those involved in the film industry to avoid actions that fall outside the boundaries of Islam.

His appeal followed public criticism after a man attended the red-carpet premiere of the film Lily at Olympus on Thursday wearing a dress. Images of the attendee were widely shared on social media, prompting commentary directed at the government.

In a post on his X account on Friday evening, President Muizzu said every citizen of the Maldives should ensure that their conduct remains within Islamic principles, noting that the Maldives is a Muslim country. He said being an example to younger generations in line with Islamic culture is an important responsibility.

“We must stay away from things that are against Muslim culture. I also ask the people of the film and entertainment industry not to go beyond the limits of Islam,” he wrote.

Following the President’s remarks, the production team behind Lily issued a statement saying they do not encourage attire that does not align with Maldivian culture and customs. They said the dress code for the film’s premiere was intended to celebrate Maldivian heritage.

According to the statement, anyone who attended in clothing that did not comply with the event’s dress code had not been invited by the production team. The team apologised for the incident and said measures would be taken to prevent similar occurrences at future events.
