Police probe missing cigarette cartons at Villimalé station

According to police, officers discovered the cigarettes were missing when handing over seized items to Maldives Customs Service on 12 November.

Police are investigating the disappearance of several cartons of cigarettes from the Villimalé Police Station.

According to police, officers discovered the cigarettes were missing when handing over seized items to Maldives Customs Service on 12 November.

Police said they had seized 32 cartons of illegally imported cigarettes from a foreign national on 23 May. When the items were to be transferred to customs, six cartons were found missing.

During the inquiry, police also identified a second discrepancy involving cigarettes seized from two foreigners on 23 December 2024. In that case, 31 cartons were missing from the recorded inventory.

Police said a criminal investigation has been launched into both incidents. In addition, the Professional Standards unit of the police is conducting an internal administrative inquiry.
