MP raises alarm over unavailable tests at IGMH

The letter referred to recent difficulties faced by an 18-year-old patient receiving treatment for a mental health condition.

An emergency motion was submitted to Parliament on Saturday raising concerns that some medical tests previously available at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) can no longer be conducted due to a lack of equipment.

Maavah MP Ahmed Shakir of the MDP filed the matter with Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, requesting that the issue be reviewed by the Parliamentary Social Committee.

The letter referred to recent difficulties faced by an 18-year-old patient receiving treatment for a mental health condition. According to Shakir:

  • The patient had been informed that IGMH would carry out the required tests before treatment

  • When the hospital issued tokens for the tests, more than 200 people queued for the service

  • On the day of the appointment, IGMH informed the patient that the tests could not be conducted because some of the necessary equipment was unavailable

The letter further noted that several tests important to patient care are currently not available. These include:

  • Lithium level testing, due to a lack of reagents and petri dishes

  • Blood donations for stroke patients, as Maldives does not have the required medicines or facilities

“These developments add to the shortage of essential medicines that many people are facing,” Shakir wrote.

The Parliament has not yet announced whether the Social Committee will take up the issue.
