Malé City Mayor Adam Azim has criticised the formation of new political parties ahead of election periods, stating that the trend has continued across multiple election cycles.

Azim made the remarks during a political gathering held on Thursday night at Lonuziyaaraiykolhu.

He said that new groups often enter the political space under different names during election periods and make commitments to the public, but do not deliver on them.

Azim stated that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has maintained its structure and identity since its establishment.

He called on voters to support the MDP in the upcoming council elections.

The mayor said that maintaining a consistent political identity contributes to public trust and accountability.

He also questioned the commitments made by newly formed parties and their ability to implement them.

Azim said the MDP has continued to operate under the same name and framework over time.

In recent years, supporters of a rival political ideology have been associated with multiple parties. Following internal disputes within the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), many members joined the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

The PPM later nominated former President Abdulla Yameen as its presidential candidate. After he was unable to contest, Dr Mohamed Muizzu contested under the People’s National Congress (PNC) and was elected.

Subsequently, the PPM was dissolved, and the DRP was also disbanded after failing to meet membership requirements.
