President Mohamed Muizzu said on Thursday that individuals accused of serious crimes who remain in jail until the end of their trials cannot be released “within five minutes,” noting that such action is outside his authority.

His remarks came during a meeting with residents of Maafannu at Thaajuddeen School, after a participant claimed the President could resolve the issue quickly if he wished. The individual referenced comments made in the past by former President Abdulla Yameen, who had claimed restrictions on detainees could be lifted in minutes.

The participant alleged that some politicians and their families receive lenient treatment in criminal cases while others face extended detention.

Responding, President Muizzu said 343 individuals are currently in custody, although many have been released in other cases. He stressed that he has no legal right to order the release of detainees accused of serious crimes.

He said those in custody include people accused of:

  • 29 murder cases

  • 70 violent assault cases

  • 116 drug smuggling cases

  • 20 terrorism cases

  • 117 child sexual abuse cases

He added that others in custody face charges involving homosexuality, prostitution, arson, kidnapping, domestic violence, armed robbery and money laundering.

The President asked whether the public would want such detainees to be released “within five minutes.”

He said the government’s role is to support enforcement agencies and the courts by providing the resources needed to expedite trials and reduce prolonged detention. According to him, these measures have now been arranged for the judiciary.
