Fishermen protest over unfulfilled pledges
According to the BKMU, all four demands form part of the government’s manifesto pledges to the fisheries sector.
Fishermen began a protest at the Kanneli Jetty in Hulhumalé on Wednesday, claiming the government has not fulfilled the commitments made to them.
A large number of fishing vessels gathered in the jetty area as the Maldives marked Fishermen’s Day. The demonstration was organised by the Bodu Kanneli Fishermen’s Union (BKMU), which represents the fishermen and is leading the protest. The union said the protest would continue until the issues raised are addressed.
The fishermen are calling for four main measures:
-
For state-owned fish company MIFCO to resume purchasing large fish
-
Setting minimum purchase prices of MVR 80 and MVR 100, depending on size
-
Supply of fuel to fishermen at the base rate
-
Improved access to ice
According to the BKMU, all four demands form part of the government’s manifesto pledges to the fisheries sector. The union said fishermen have been requesting the fulfilment of these commitments since the current administration took office, but discussions held to date have not resulted in progress.
“None of the efforts made to date have given the desired light to the fishermen,” the BKMU said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Many fishermen remained at the protest site throughout the day, with some saying they would stay until their concerns are resolved.
“This time, what about one month, even three months, I will not leave this place until I see some light,” one fisherman said.
