Former President Abdulla Yameen on Wednesday said he would reset the judiciary if he returned to power.
Yameen made the remarks while speaking at a rally organised by the People’s National Front (PNF) at Artificial Beach on Wednesday evening. He repeated his claim that the judiciary is under the influence of the current government and said the entire judicial system required a reset.
He said one reason for this position was the removal of academic judges from the Supreme Court. Yameen referred to the suspension and dismissal of two judges while a case concerning parliamentary seats was pending before the court.
“Who suffered? The people suffered. We lost three judges. Judge Azmiralda Zahir, Mahaz Ali Zahir and Husnu Suood,” Yameen said, adding that the judges were no longer serving on the bench.
Yameen’s own cases remain pending before the courts.
He said the Supreme Court should have the capacity to reject actions taken by the government, warning that failure to do so would prevent the public from obtaining justice.
Yameen questioned why judges should hesitate to oppose the executive, stating that they are granted authority under the law.
“So I am asking you to reset the judges tonight. Otherwise, if we get another chance to govern, we will reset them,” he said.
