Court jails man over assault at Villimale ferry terminal

The Criminal Court has sentenced a man in connection with an assault carried out with a sharp object near the Villimale Ferry Terminal in Malé.

The individual convicted in the case is Mohamed Shafeeq of Janbureezugasdhoshuge, GDh. Gadhdhoo.

The state prosecuted Shafeeq under the Prohibition of Intimidation and Possession of Dangerous Weapons and Sharp Objects Act for committing an assault using a sharp object or dangerous weapon.

According to court records, the incident occurred on 14 February 2023 at around 3:30pm in the Villimale Ferry Terminal area.

During the altercation, Shafeeq attacked and injured another individual using a sharp object.

At the start of the trial, Shafeeq denied the charge and called defence witnesses, stating that he was not present at the scene at the time of the incident.

However, during the stage allocated for closing statements, he admitted to committing the offence.

In its verdict delivered on the 10th of this month, the Criminal Court found Shafeeq guilty of the charge of assault using a sharp object.

The court initially imposed a sentence of seven years in prison. After deducting the period he had spent in custody during the investigation and trial, the remaining sentence to be served is four years.
