President Mohamed Muizzu on Sunday said cases involving detainees held for more than a year without trial would be resolved before March.

The president made the remarks in response to a question from a member of the public during a meeting with residents of Hulhumalé Phase I. He said the issue of prolonged pre-trial detention would not continue for much longer.

“These cases have been pending for years. I shared the details previously. Most cases that have been ongoing for over a year will be concluded within the next three months,” he said.

Muizzu had earlier stated that 343 individuals are currently in custody. According to the figures he provided, 29 detainees are held in connection with murder cases, 70 in assault-related cases, 116 in drug smuggling cases, 20 on terrorism-related charges, and 117 in cases involving sexual abuse of children.

He said additional detainees are being held in connection with offences including homosexuality, prostitution, arson, kidnapping, domestic violence, armed robbery and money laundering.
