Air quality levels in the Malé region reached a level considered harmful on Monday, according to monitoring data.
Readings from the air quality monitoring system at the Centre for Maritime Studies in Villimalé showed an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 175. An AQI reading in this range is classified as a red alert and indicates a risk to public health.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has advised the public to take precautions in response to the elevated pollution levels.
According to health guidelines, AQI levels between 151 and 200 are considered hazardous, with increased risk of respiratory and cardiovascular conditions for the general population.
Data published on air quality monitoring platforms indicated that particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations were recorded at 90 micrograms per cubic metre. This level exceeds the World Health Organisation’s recommended guideline by a significant margin.
Haze has affected visibility in the Malé region. Authorities noted that during the dry season, changes in wind patterns can carry dust and smoke from regional sources into the Maldives, affecting air quality.
