The Maldives Meteorological Service said on Wednesday that haze is expected to continue affecting all parts of the Maldives for the next five days.

The Met Office said haze was present across the country on Wednesday, with the greatest impact recorded in the northern and central regions. Weather reports indicate visibility of less than two kilometres in several northern atolls.

The Met Office advised people who spend extended periods outdoors, including seafarers, to take precautions, as air conditions are expected to remain poor during this period.

According to the air quality monitoring system at the Center for Maritime Studies in Villimalé, the air quality index recorded a reading of 115 on Wednesday. Such conditions may increase the risk of respiratory issues for vulnerable individuals.

Health guidance issued in response to the conditions advises vulnerable persons to wear protective masks when outdoors, keep doors closed to limit the entry of outside air, and use air purifiers where available. It also advises reducing outdoor activities such as sports and exercise during periods of poor air quality.

Data published on the IQAir website shows PM2.5 levels at 41 micrograms per cubic metre on Wednesday.
