Rape suspect surrenders to police after more than a year

A man accused of rape has surrendered to police after remaining at large for more than one year.
The accused, identified as Izam Zahir, 25, of Sabaha Manzil, GDh. Vaadhoo, turned himself in on Saturday following media reports.
Police said Izam had been missing since July 2024. He presented himself to police custody and was arrested upon surrender.
According to police, the arrest was carried out in compliance with a court order requiring him to be produced before the court on Tuesday.
Police further stated that the court had previously issued several orders directing officers to produce Izam in custody. During the period he remained at large, police issued nine wanted notices for his appearance in court.
