Izam Zahir, 25, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty in a rape case, following his failure to appear in court over an extended period.
Izam had been missing since July 2024 and surrendered to police on Saturday after media reports highlighted the case. He was produced before the court under police custody on Tuesday.
At a hearing held at 10:00 am, the court ruled that the charge against him had been proven and imposed a sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment.
Court records show that Izam’s whereabouts were unknown for several years, preventing summons from being served. The court had repeatedly ordered police to locate and produce him.
According to police, nine wanted notices had been issued requiring Izam to appear before the court prior to his surrender.
