A wave of public anger continues to surge in the capital Male as dozens of young protesters gathered outside the Sergeant Adam Haleem Crime Investigation Building in Henveiru on Wednesday evening, demanding transparency and accountability over what they call an "unbelievable" explanation from police regarding a young woman’s fall from a building rooftop.
The incident, which took place early Friday morning, involved a 21-year-old woman who was found gravely injured after falling onto the roof of a house in Henveiru.
She was placed on a ventilator the following day and was reportedly taken off life support last night. While her current condition remains undisclosed, the mystery surrounding the fall has triggered widespread speculation and outrage.
Police have stated that the woman fell on her own and that there is no evidence of foul play. The explanation, however, has done little to quell public suspicion — especially among the youth, who accuse authorities of shielding key individuals and ignoring evidence that defies logic.
“There is nothing in the police statement that makes sense. They’re asking us to suspend common sense and science,” said one protester, referring to the claim that the woman fell through a narrow toilet window from the ninth floor. “You are denying physics.”
Social media has since been flooded with posts challenging the official narrative, with users sharing diagrams, photos, and personal interpretations of how such a fall could — or could not — have occurred.
The protests have gained traction not only due to the doubts surrounding the incident, but also due to the identities of individuals allegedly involved.
Protesters are calling for the arrest of a young man linked to the case, who is said to hold a position within the government. They are also demanding the removal of all government-affiliated individuals implicated in the rumors.
Among the protesters’ main demands are:
-
A transparent investigation into the incident, with full disclosure of forensic findings;
-
The immediate arrest of any suspects potentially involved;
-
An independent review of the case, citing distrust in the police’s objectivity;
-
Suspension or removal of any government officials connected to the case until the investigation concludes.
“You think we have no brains? How can someone fall out of a tiny window like that?” shouted another protester, echoing widespread disbelief.
