MDP demands fair probe into woman’s fall

The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Wednesday voiced serious concerns over the ongoing police investigation into an incident in which a 21-year-old woman was found critically injured on the rooftop of a building in Henveiru, Malé.
The young woman was discovered early Friday morning slumped on the roof of a house, and her condition deteriorated rapidly. She was placed on a ventilator the following day, and was later removed from life support on Sunday night. The nature of her fall remains unclear, with speculation swirling across social media that she may have been pushed.
Despite widespread public suspicion, police have stated that there is no evidence indicating the woman was pushed from the ninth floor. However, the MDP has questioned the integrity of the investigation, suggesting that it is not being conducted in line with standard procedures.
In a press release, the MDP emphasised the need for transparency and impartiality.
"It is the legal duty of the police to uphold and enforce the law without prejudice and without hesitation," the statement said.
The party also highlighted claims from the victim’s family, who told local media that police have deviated from protocols typically followed in similar cases. This, according to the MDP, raises serious questions about whether justice will be served.
Calling for an independent investigation, the MDP urged authorities to ensure that the inquiry is conducted strictly within the framework of the law and free from any external influence.
“MDP calls on the police administration to conduct a fair investigation free from influence and reveal the truth to the people of Maldives to the extent that there is no doubt,” the party stated.
The MDP further called on oversight bodies to investigate any potential negligence by police in handling the case and take appropriate action if misconduct is found.
Beyond the immediate incident, the party used the opportunity to renew its call for stronger anti-drug measures, urging law enforcement to crack down on drug trafficking and hold those involved accountable.
