Theft tops reported crimes as domestic violence cases increase

Police statistics indicate that theft cases recorded last year were the highest among all reported offences.

The highest number of reported crimes last year were theft-related offences, according to statistics published by the Maldives Police Service. The data also shows an increase in reported domestic violence cases, while sexual offences declined.

Police statistics indicate that theft cases recorded last year were the highest among all reported offences. More than 3,400 theft cases were reported during the year, representing an eight per cent decrease from around 3,700 cases recorded in 2024. Despite the decline, theft remains the most frequently reported offence over the past six years.

Reports of robbery also declined during the year. A total of 231 robbery cases were recorded, compared to 506 cases reported in 2024.

Domestic violence cases increased compared to the previous year. Police recorded 301 domestic violence cases last year, up from 255 cases in 2024, marking an increase of 46 cases, or approximately 18 per cent. In contrast, reported sexual offences fell by 19 per cent over the same period.

Accident-related cases were the second most reported category after theft. More than 3,000 accidents were reported last year, compared to around 2,800 cases in 2024.

Drug-related cases ranked third among reported incidents. Police recorded more than 2,000 drug-related cases last year, an increase from about 1,600 cases reported in 2024.
