Drug trafficking suspect seeks bail relief citing mental health
The two were produced before the Criminal Court on Tuesday for a review of remand after their initial seven-day detention period expired.
A man arrested in connection with a drug trafficking case has asked the court to relieve him of bail conditions, citing his mental health, but the request was denied.
Two men were arrested following a police raid on an apartment in Malé on the 5th of this month. The suspects are Mohamed Evan Hamid, 23, of Valuthereyge, GDh. Madaveli, and Mohamed Raid Ali Asgar, 31, of H. Sakeenamanzil.
The two were produced before the Criminal Court on Tuesday for a review of remand after their initial seven-day detention period expired.
During the hearing, Raid told the court that he has a mental illness and said he had been used by others to commit crimes. He requested to be released under house arrest in light of his condition. He had made similar statements during his initial remand hearing, which were not accepted by the court.
Presiding judge Ismail Shafeeu ruled that there were no grounds to grant release and extended Raid’s remand by 30 days.
Evan did not make submissions during the hearing. His remand was also extended by 30 days.
Both men have been charged with drug possession and drug trafficking.
