Male Mayor Dr Mohamed Muizzu said on Wednesday that the council will take over waste collection from public areas in Male once their agreement with WAMCO expires later this year. He said the council will collect garbage only from public places and household waste will continue to be collected by WAMCO.

The agreement between the council and WAMCO to collect waste from public places in the city will expire on 26 December.

  • Instead of renewing the agreement, the Male City Council decided to ensure that the work was carried out themselves

  • The council cited WAMCO’s failure to comply with the agreement they had had as reason

Muizzu told the media on Wednesday that despite the agreement with WAMCO, the council was forced to collect garbage from parks and public areas in the city. Despite several rounds of discussions and letters with WAMCO, there had been no solution to the problem, he said.

He noted that the council would only collect garbage from public areas:

  • Roads

  • Parks

  • Lagoon

  • Other public areas

"The council will not get involved in any collection of garbage from homes and buildings," the mayor said.

Muizzu said the council would hand over the collected waste to WAMCO. This will be done by paying a price to the company, he added.

Muizzu added that the council would provide such jobs to WAMCO street sweeping employees should they require employment.
