Male City Council on Sunday opened a special section to strengthen the garbage collection activities in the general areas of the city.
A new section titled 'Waste Management Section' was created and opened at a function held Sunday morning. This section will be located in the council's waste management section on the general services section of the city.
Speaking after inaugurating the waste management section, Mayor Dr Mohamed Muizz said:
-
It was decided to open a separate section for the purpose to address the space crunch required for administrative work
-
Earlier, the work was carried out in Male Municipality
Muizz said the separate space for this work was created by the council staff on their own without a contractor. The council had allocated MVR 300,000 for the work.
"The furniture like the desks were built by themselves. The ceiling was made by recycling metal rods from waste. The only cost was to purchase the materials," he said.
The Mayor had promised to improve waste management services in the capital by taking additional measures in the next two to three weeks.
Muizz said, "The result of this will be to better upkeep the city’s cleanliness in the future."
The council said there are 255 employees working in the section. All administrative, operational and managerial activities of these employees will be done in the office.
The agreement between the city council and WAMCO to collect waste from public places in Male and Villimale expired on December 26.
-
Council collects only garbage from public places; household waste will be collected by WAMCO, which is already doing it
-
Mayor Muizz said the decision not to renew the contract was taken because WAMCO was not doing their job properly despite paying a hefty price to them
-
When the city council started clearing trash from public spaces, WAMCO stopped collecting garbage taken out to the streets from houses. As a result, there was a lot of garbage piled up on the streets
-
The civic body, however, maintained that the waste collected from households should be disposed of by WAMCO as households were paying WAMCO for it
-
The issue escalated and WAMCO finally started collecting the garbage dumped on the road from households
