Adam Azim pledges commitment to MDP after primary victory

Incumbent Malé Mayor Adam Azim, who won the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) ticket for the Malé mayoral election in the party primary held on Friday, said he would remain with the party and acknowledged the support he had received from its members since joining the MDP.
Adam Azim made the remarks while addressing supporters at a gathering held at Citron Restaurant to mark his victory in the MDP primary. He began his address by offering thanks and acknowledging the efforts of his campaign team.
He described the primary result as a victory for the MDP and said there were issues to be addressed across the Maldives, including in Malé. He said his aim was to work with the party to address these matters.
Adam Azim said he remained thankful for the trust and support extended to him by the party leadership and members. He said the support he had received since joining the MDP had contributed to his political career, including his election as mayor of Malé.
He said internal party elections strengthened the MDP and helped maintain unity, adding that this process had played a role in his continued association with the party.
Responding to claims made during the primary campaign that he would align with the government or leave the MDP, Adam Azim said he would continue to work within the party and support its objectives. He said he intended to contribute to the party’s work and remain part of its activities.
He said the MDP had brought changes to the Maldives and that he aimed to contribute to those efforts. He also said that success in the upcoming local council elections would depend on the participation of party members and expressed confidence that the party could secure further electoral victories, including the 2028 presidential election, through collective effort.
Adam Azim won the MDP mayoral ticket after defeating former parliamentarian Ali Azim, who contested the primary with the backing of former President Mohamed Nasheed. Ali Azim accepted the result and contacted Adam Azim to offer his congratulations. Adam Azim acknowledged the gesture during his address and called for cooperation within the party.
He said cooperation among party members was necessary to address national and local issues and to secure victories in future elections, including for the Malé City Council and councils across the Maldives.
