The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Sunday criticised a police request to the Prosecutor General’s Office seeking prosecution of party members in connection with a rally held on 3 October, saying the move was intended to deter participation in upcoming protests.

The Maldives Police Service has submitted requests relating to a member of Parliament, a local council candidate and two party members who took part in the rally in Malé.

Those named are Kendhoo constituency MP Mauroof Zakir, Hulhumalé North council candidate Fathimath Zahiyya, Abdul Salam of Maafolheyvilla/N. Holhudhoo, and Aishath Najda Ali of Disk/HDh. Kulhudhuffushi.

Police said the request relates to an alleged attempt to march along Majeedhee Magu instead of the designated Ameenee Magu, in violation of police instructions.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the MDP said the Constitution guarantees the right to peaceful assembly without prior permission from the state. The party said the 3 October rally was a political gathering organised to advocate for fundamental rights and freedoms.

The MDP alleged that the authorities attempted to disrupt the rally through police action, including arrests, and that the request for prosecutions five months later was aimed at interfering with the party’s preparations for the upcoming local council elections.

The party said the timing of the request amounted to intimidation intended to reduce participation in a protest planned for the 21st of this month.

“I condemn the political charges against MDP activists ordered by the government of President Mohamed Muizzu. Such actions will not deter members of this party,” the statement said.

The October rally was interrupted by police shortly after it began. Seven protesters were arrested during clashes between police and members of the public. The Prosecutor General’s Office later decided not to pursue charges against those individuals.
