The Maldivian Democratic Party has appointed former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as advisors to the party.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s National Council held on Saturday night, following discussions on internal matters after the Local Council Election results.

During the meeting, the council agreed to establish a committee to advise the Chairperson on party matters. The committee will function alongside the National Council.

The members of the committee are:

  • Former President Mohamed Nasheed

  • Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih

  • Party President Abdulla Shahid

  • Former Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail

  • Acting Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa

  • Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Nazil

The committee will remain in place until a Chairperson is elected.

The National Council also decided to amend the party’s charter to grant National Council membership to individuals who have served as President under the party, for as long as they remain members.

Under this amendment, Nasheed and Solih have been appointed as members of the National Council.

The party will seek approval for these changes at the next Congress.
