The Maldivian Democratic Party has withdrawn a motion to remove Abdul Ghafoor Moosa from the position of Interim Chairperson following discussions among party leaders.

Sources told ‘Dhauru’ that an agreement has also been reached to reinstate Deputy Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed and Legal Director Ahmed Maaroof, who were previously removed from their posts.

The dismissals followed disagreements within the party after the recent election. Ghafoor had stated that the removals were due to a lack of cooperation.

Following consultations, a resolution has been reached, which has been confirmed by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and former President Mohamed Nasheed.

According to party sources, the motion to remove Ghafoor has been withdrawn as the issues have been addressed through discussions.

“In addition, it has been decided to reinstate Ibrahim Waheed and Ahmed Maaroof to their positions,” a senior party official said.

The motion to remove Ghafoor had been submitted with the signatures of 55 out of 123 National Council members, requesting a council meeting. The meeting, which had been scheduled for Monday, will no longer take place following the withdrawal of the motion.

An emergency meeting of the National Council is scheduled for tonight. The meeting will be held behind closed doors.

The recent dispute began over the agenda for a rally held to mark the party’s performance in the election. Supporters of different factions had raised disagreements over leadership roles.

Nasheed and former Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail did not attend the rally. Their faction stated that a prior decision to include them as speakers had been changed. Ghafoor denied the claim.
