The Health Protection Agency has urged the public to avoid social gatherings and public activities if they are experiencing fever or other symptoms of illness, citing an increase in infectious diseases ahead of the Eid holidays.
In a social media post on Sunday, the agency said cases of dengue, influenza and the common cold are increasing across the country. The HPA also referred to recent measles cases detected in the Greater Malé region and called on the public to take preventive measures to limit further spread.
“With the Eid holidays approaching, we anticipate an increase in travel abroad and to the islands, as well as more frequent house visits and gatherings in crowded public spaces,” the statement said.
The HPA advised members of the public to remain at home if they develop fever or respiratory symptoms and to avoid attending gatherings or participating in social activities while unwell.
The agency also advised individuals to seek medical attention if symptoms worsen and to wear masks when visiting hospitals or clinics. It further recommended avoiding public transport while ill.
According to the HPA, individuals tested for measles should remain in isolation until test results are confirmed.
The agency also advised the public to:
-
Wear masks while travelling and in crowded indoor areas
-
Maintain personal hygiene
-
Ensure vaccinations are up to date
-
Use mosquito repellent and protective clothing
-
Screen homes against mosquitoes and remove breeding sites
The advisory comes as large Eid celebrations and public events are being planned across Malé and surrounding areas.
Although the Maldives had previously achieved measles elimination status, several cases have recently been reported. The HPA stated that more than 74 contacts linked to confirmed measles cases have been identified.
