Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that a resolution is being reached regarding the current disagreements within the Maldivian Democratic Party leadership, with a final decision expected by tomorrow night.

Speaking at a rally held in Lh. Hinnavaru on Friday, Solih said the party leadership has been engaged in discussions to resolve the issue and ensure that all members move forward together.

The disagreements began after former President Mohamed Nasheed and former party Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail were not included as speakers at a rally in Malé held to mark the party’s performance in the council elections. Members aligned with Nasheed stated that the decision was influenced by sections of the leadership.

Tensions increased following the removal of Ahmed Maaroof from the position of Legal Director and Ibrahim Waheed from the role of Deputy Chairperson.

Subsequently, members aligned with Nasheed submitted a proposal signed by 55 National Council members seeking the removal of Abdul Ghafoor Moosa from his position as Interim Chairperson.

Solih said the disagreements had caused concern among party members at a time when the party was marking its performance in the elections. He stated that differences in views have occurred within the party in the past and have been resolved through discussion.

He said the leadership has been working to reach a solution, adding that he had been involved in discussions since the previous day.

Solih stated that the party would move forward with its leadership, including Interim Chairperson Ghafoor and Party President Abdulla Shahid.

“The target is to resolve this by tomorrow or tomorrow night at the latest. By then, a solution will be in place for the leadership to work together. The party will move forward with its leadership,” Solih said.

He added that the issues were similar to disagreements that have arisen in the party before and that efforts are focused on resolving them and preparing for the 2028 presidential election.

Solih also stated that the results of the council elections place responsibility on the party to work towards forming a government in the future, and that preparations should begin.
