The decision follows discussions among party leaders after disagreements within the party following the recent election.

The Maldivian Democratic Party has agreed to transfer the management of the party to an interim committee of five leaders until a chairperson is elected.

The decision follows discussions among party leaders after disagreements within the party following the recent election. Former Presidents Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Mohamed Nasheed confirmed that an agreement has been reached.

According to information obtained by ‘Dhauru’, the interim committee will consist of:

  • Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, Interim Chairperson

  • Abdulla Shahid, Party President

  • Ibrahim Mohamed Solih

  • Mohamed Nasheed

  • Fayyaz Ismail, former Chairperson

A senior party official stated that the committee will manage party affairs until a new chairperson is elected.

The leaders have also agreed to grant Nasheed membership in the party’s National Council.

“This will be done through a resolution of the National Council to provide membership to individuals who have served as former presidents,” the official said.

An emergency meeting of the National Council is scheduled for tonight, where resolutions to establish the interim committee and grant membership to former presidents are expected to be proposed. The meeting will be held behind closed doors.

Under a previous decision of the National Council, members of the cabinet during the previous MDP administration were granted membership in the council. Solih is therefore already a member of the National Council.
