Ambulances have been handed over to 56 islands to support emergency health services.

The handover took place at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Health on Saturday, attended by Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim.

Speaking at the event, the minister said concerns related to the health system were among the most frequently raised issues during recent island visits by President Mohamed Muizzu. He said the government was working to address these challenges and that the distribution of ambulances formed part of that effort.

The ambulances were provided in collaboration with Maldives Ports Limited (MPL). The project cost MVR 65.3 million, according to the minister.

Nazim said additional ambulances would be distributed in the future, with plans to provide vehicles to a further 31 islands. He also said larger paramedic and emergency ambulances would be introduced for use in islands with higher populations.

Maintenance and repair of the ambulances will be carried out by MPL. The minister noted that ambulance services had not been operating as intended in some areas, citing delays in repairing damaged vehicles as one of the reasons.
