The new academic year began on Tuesday, with schools reopening across Malé and the islands from 6:30am.

Streets in Malé and other islands saw increased movement as students and parents travelled to schools for the first day of term. More than 80,000 students returned to classrooms following the annual school holidays.

A parent whose child enrolled at Ameeniyya School this year said she had checked her child’s school bag several times the previous night to ensure the required books were included.

With the resumption of classes, households adjusted to early morning routines after the holiday period.

According to the Ministry of Education, teaching will be conducted in 219 government schools during the current academic year.

The ministry said more than 4,700 students graduated from pre-school this year. About 1,500 students transferred from schools in the islands to schools in the capital, while more than 800 students moved from Malé to schools in Hulhumalé.

The largest new school to open this year is Shaheed Ali School in Hulhumalé Phase Two. The school is expected to enrol more than 1,900 students.
