President Mohamed Muizzu said on Thursday that a dedicated health insurance scheme has been launched for athletes to cover treatment for injuries sustained during sports competitions.
In a post on X, the President said the insurance cover became effective on Thursday and currently includes 385 players and officials from 18 national sports associations.
Under the scheme, coverage applies to injuries sustained during tournaments held in the Maldives, as well as during international competitions and training programmes conducted overseas. The President said the initiative is intended to ensure access to medical treatment for athletes when injuries occur in the course of official sporting activities.
President Muizzu said the government will take responsibility for safeguarding the health of athletes representing the country. He added that the introduction of a dedicated insurance scheme for players has been a long-standing request from the national sports community.
