STO denies gas shortage, confirms incoming shipment
The official said that, due to the impact on supply, 10 kg cylinders are currently being sold at a reduced price together with 8 kg cylinders.

State Trading Organisation (STO) said on Sunday that its subsidiary Maldive Gas is selling 10 kg cooking gas cylinders at a discounted rate alongside 8 kg cylinders due to disruptions in the global gas supply chain.
STO made the statement amid reports circulating on social media claiming that the Maldives is facing a shortage of cooking gas.
Maldive Gas was transferred to STO in April last year. The current arrangement follows a transaction in October 2024 in which USD 240,000, equivalent to MVR 3.7 million, sent by Maldive Gas to a Dubai-based company for the purchase of gas was not recovered.
An STO official told Atoll Times that supply chain disruptions have affected the global cooking gas market. The official said the two cooking gas suppliers operating in the Maldives are coordinating to ensure continued availability to customers.
The official said that, due to the impact on supply, 10 kg cylinders are currently being sold at a reduced price together with 8 kg cylinders.
STO said the Maldives will not run out of cooking gas and that a shipment is expected to arrive before the start of Ramadan.
