Former parliamentarian Mohamed Musthafa said on Monday that former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih should be sentenced to death, comments he posted on social media.

The posts prompted questions from journalists in a police media WhatsApp group on Monday. The Maldives Police Service did not issue a response, and officers could not be reached for comment despite repeated attempts.

Musthafa, a former member of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), wrote that Solih should be executed and stated that circumstances would have been different if Musthafa had held power. In a subsequent post, he tagged Solih and referred to former state minister Akram Kamaluddin, stating that different outcomes would apply under Islamic law or in other jurisdictions.

Musthafa has, for several years, alleged that Solih owes him USD 1.7 million. He has claimed the amount includes USD 500,000 he says was provided to influence members of parliament during a presidential election and USD 1.2 million related to the sale of an aircraft. He has continued to post criticism directed at Solih in relation to these claims.

Solih has not publicly responded to the allegations or the statements.
