Bangladeshi man remanded after kidnapping in Malé

A Bangladeshi national has been arrested and remanded in custody for 30 days by the Criminal Court following the alleged kidnapping of another Bangladeshi man in Malé.

Maldives Police Service said it received a report of the incident at 1:22 am on Friday. The victim was rescued at 2:29 am from a house in the city where he was being held.

Police identified the suspect as Iqbal Mia, 35, a Bangladeshi national. Authorities said he was living illegally in the Maldives.

According to police, the kidnapped man was located during the investigation and rescued without injury. No further details were provided.

Court documents state that Iqbal is accused of kidnapping a foreign national and subjecting him to torture. The documents also note that he was residing in the Maldives without legal status.

Investigations into the case are ongoing, police said.
