The People’s Majlis has not held a sitting for more than a week.

The Majlis last convened on Tuesday of last week. That session was the only sitting held during the week before Ramadan. No further sittings have been held since then.

Attempts by Atoll Times to obtain comment from the Parliament were unsuccessful. Abdul Raheem Abdulla could not be reached for comment.

Members of parliament from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) said sittings are not being held as members of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) are engaged in campaigning for the upcoming local council elections.

“Some MPs are campaigning in rural areas. In that situation, sittings are not being held,” an MDP member said.

Parliament reopened on 5 March following a two-month recess. In the 25 days since reopening, the Majlis has held five sittings, including the presidential address.

Under the standing orders of Parliament, sittings are required to be held at least three days a week.
