Mohamed Sinan on Tuesday announced his intention to contest the People’s National Congress (PNC) primary for the Hithadhoo North by-election.
Sinan lost his seat in the People’s Majlis following a Supreme Court ruling. He had represented the Hithadhoo North constituency on a PNC ticket.
The court ruled that his seat was vacated after he failed to settle a debt in line with a judgment issued by the Hithadhoo Magistrate Court.
The case relates to a loan of MVR 3.8 million obtained from Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB). A court order required repayment of the remaining MVR 2.5 million within six months. The amount was not settled within that period.
A case was filed at the Supreme Court on February 13 last year seeking a declaration of disqualification. Sinan settled the outstanding amount on the same day the case was filed. The court ruled last Sunday that he was disqualified under a constitutional provision concerning failure to settle a debt in accordance with a court judgment.
In a social media post, Sinan said he would seek the support of PNC members in Hithadhoo North for the upcoming election.
The by-election is scheduled for June 6.
The PNC has opened applications for its primary until Sunday. A primary will be held only if more than one candidate meets the criteria set by the party’s technical committee.
If required, the primary is scheduled for April 25 from 08:00 to 16:00.
