Nasheed calls for all-party interim govt after cabinet resignations

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has called for the formation of an all-party interim government following the resignation of ten cabinet ministers on Tuesday.

The resignations took place after President Dr Mohamed Muizzu requested several cabinet members to step down following the outcome of the recent local council elections.

In a post on X, Nasheed said the President no longer has the confidence of his cabinet and that public trust in the President has declined. He called for the establishment of an interim government comprising all political parties to address the current situation.

Nasheed said such an arrangement is required to carry out reforms and to ensure the conduct of an election. He also referred to the economic situation, stating that developments in the Middle East are affecting the Maldives and require a coordinated response.

According to the President’s Office, the ministers resigned to allow the President to implement changes in line with public expectations.

The ministers who resigned are Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Defence Ghassan Maumoon, Minister of Social and Family Development Dr Aishath Shiham, Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr Mariyam Mariya, Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar, Minister of Youth Ibrahim Waheed, Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Higher Education Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed, and Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage Adam Naseer Ibrahim.
