President Mohamed Muizzu said on Wednesday that he will support only candidates contesting under the ticket of the People’s National Congress (PNC) in the upcoming local council elections.

The President made the remarks while visiting households in the Hulhumalé South constituency.

He rejected claims circulating in the constituency that he supports a candidate from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Muizzu said he wished to clarify the matter to residents of Hulhumalé South.

“The candidates I support in the upcoming council elections will be on the PNC ticket. I have received information that the MDP candidate in this constituency says that he has my support. That is not true. I will support only our candidate,” the President said.

He added that he would not support candidates from other parties or independent candidates.

“I will not support anyone from another party, whether independent or from the MDP,” he said.

The President said he supports the party system and wants candidates from the PNC to be elected.

“We want people to vote for the bird,” he said, referring to the PNC party symbol.
