Mohamed Sinan has secured the ticket of the People’s National Congress (PNC) to contest the Hithadhoo North by-election.

Sinan previously lost his seat following a ruling by the Hithadhoo Magistrate Court related to an outstanding loan. The vacancy was later confirmed by the Supreme Court.

Under the Constitution, a by-election must be held within 60 days of a parliamentary seat becoming vacant.

The PNC primary to select its candidate was held on Saturday, with Sinan contesting against Ahmed Saeed, a councillor for the Hithadhoo Moolekede ward.

Results of the primary were as follows:

  • 1-

    Mohamed Sinan: 226 votes

  • 2-

    Ahmed Saeed: 187 votes

The by-election for the Hithadhoo North constituency is scheduled for 6 June.

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has nominated Abdulla Sodiq as its candidate. Sodiq secured the nomination without a primary as the sole applicant.
