Investigation launched into custodial death
Police said the individual was found unconscious in his cell at the Malé custodial facility on Friday.
A 45-year-old Maldivian man has died while in police custody in Malé.
The Maldives Police Service said the individual was found unconscious in his cell at the Malé custodial facility on Friday afternoon. He was taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for treatment.
According to police, hospital authorities confirmed that he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The individual had been held in custody under a court order requiring his appearance before the court.
Police stated that the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the National Integrity Commission (NIC) have been informed of the incident.
