India issues advisory to travellers to Maldives on drug laws
In its statement, the NCB noted that drug-related laws in the Maldives have been strengthened.
India’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has issued an advisory to its citizens travelling to the Maldives, urging them not to accept packages or luggage from unknown individuals.
The advisory follows recent cases in which foreign nationals, including Indian citizens, were detained by Maldives Customs and handed over to the Maldives Police Service on suspicion of attempting to smuggle narcotics into the country.
In its statement, the NCB noted that drug-related laws in the Maldives have been strengthened. It stated that individuals found guilty of drug trafficking may face penalties including life imprisonment and, under recent amendments, capital punishment.
The bureau advised travellers to avoid carrying items for others and to remain vigilant regarding their belongings at airports and seaports.
It also urged Indian nationals to comply with the laws and regulations of the countries they visit.
