Probe finds Indian billionaire under influence in speedboat capsize
He said records reviewed by authorities show that the vessel had reached speeds of up to 72 miles per hour.
Preliminary findings from an investigation indicate that the operator of a speedboat that capsized near V. Felidhoo and V. Keyodhoo may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
Authorities said the speedboat was carrying seven passengers when it capsized late Thursday night, about two nautical miles southwest of Keyodhoo. Two individuals remain missing.
Shujau Ali, President of the Vaavu Atoll Council, said information obtained from those on board indicates that the vessel was operated by Gautam Singhania, Managing Director of India’s Raymond Group.
“According to information gathered from those on board, the operator was piloting the vessel at the time. Data collected so far suggest that the passengers were thrown from the vessel due to the speed at which it was being driven,” he said.
He said records reviewed by authorities show that the vessel had reached speeds of up to 72 miles per hour.
The vessel involved is reported to be a racing speedboat linked to a yacht owned by Singhania.
Shujau said the incident may have involved operation at speed during night conditions.
The individual received treatment at Felidhoo hospital following the incident. According to Shujau, he did not provide information to authorities during treatment and left the island after receiving care.
Police said the incident was reported at around 1:15am. The speedboat is currently in Felidhoo harbour under police custody.
Authorities confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that the two missing individuals have not yet been located.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has deployed resources, including aerial support, to assist in the search operation.
