Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a fire that broke out last Wednesday on the first floor of G. Hiyaaroadhige in Malé.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Maldives Police Service identified the suspect as Hussain Shahuban, 29, of Sabunamuge, L. Maabaidhoo. He was taken into custody under a court order on Sunday.

Police confirmed that the suspect was presented in court and remanded in custody for five days. The investigation is ongoing.

The fire occurred in a vacant property that did not have an active electricity connection. Cleaning work was being carried out at the premises at the time of the incident.

CCTV footage from the area shows a man arriving on a motorcycle and entering the building approximately seven minutes before the fire started.

Residents stated that the property contained furniture and timber.

“We believe this was an act of arson. It is unlikely that a fire could have started there accidentally,” a resident said.

Emergency services took more than an hour to bring the fire under control. The building was damaged and is no longer in use. Damage was also reported in nearby structures.
