President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that ambulance services will be covered under the national health insurance scheme, Aasandha, in specified circumstances.

He made the announcement on Monday at a press conference held at the President’s Office, stating that the changes will take effect from Wednesday.

According to the President, the coverage will apply to emergency transport to hospitals and the transfer of deceased persons.

It will also include transport of bedridden patients, wheelchair users and persons with disabilities to hospitals for outpatient services.

Inter-hospital transfers for treatment or diagnostic purposes will be covered, along with transport to airports or jetties for patients travelling abroad or to other islands for treatment.

In addition, transport for thalassaemia patients attending outpatient services will be included.

The President said the inclusion of ambulance services in Aasandha had been raised as a public request.

“This decision was finalised after assessing financial and operational considerations,” he said.
