The number of patients referred overseas for treatment under the state health insurance scheme, Aasandha, has declined over the past three years, according to Minister of Health Dr Geela Ali.
Speaking in the People's Majlis on Wednesday, Dr Geela presented figures on the use of Aasandha services and expenditure over the past three years.
The minister said the number of patients referred abroad by the end of last year had fallen by 338 compared with 2023.
She noted, however, that the reduction had been offset by an increase in patients requiring overseas treatment for cancer. Excluding oncology cases, the number of patients referred abroad last year was 821 lower than in 2023.
Dr Geela said the reduction reflected government efforts to expand healthcare services within the Maldives and improve access to treatment locally.
She said overseas referrals under Aasandha are now limited to specialised treatment, major surgical procedures, and oncology and neurology services that are not yet available in the Maldives.
The minister added that demand for cancer treatment has increased over the past three years.
According to the figures presented, 480 more patients sought oncology treatment last year than in 2023.
The data showed that 1,638 people received cancer treatment in 2023, rising to 1,996 in 2024. Last year, the number exceeded 2,000.
Dr Geela said the figures include both newly diagnosed patients and those travelling repeatedly for ongoing treatment. They also include Maldivians residing in neighbouring countries who access treatment through the scheme.
