Health Minister Dr Geela Ali says the recent increase in Measles cases in the Maldives remains under control despite the disease spreading after re-emerging last month.

Measles, which was declared eliminated in the Maldives nine years ago, has recorded 177 confirmed cases since its return, the highest number reported at one time since the country achieved measles-free status.

Speaking in the People's Majlis on Wednesday, Dr Geela said measles cases were being detected in parts of the Maldives but that the situation remained manageable.

She noted that measles is highly contagious and can spread rapidly from person to person. However, she said the recovery period is generally short and that the current outbreak had not reached an uncontrollable stage.

The Maldives is among the countries in the region reporting a high number of measles cases this year.

Regional data indicates that Bangladesh has reported the highest number of cases, followed by India, with the Maldives ranking third. Sri Lanka and Nepal have reported lower case numbers.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has advised the public to seek medical attention if they develop a fever accompanied by a skin rash. It also recommends wearing a mask when visiting healthcare facilities, avoiding public transport, remaining in isolation while awaiting test results if measles is suspected, and avoiding public gatherings if symptoms are present.

Common symptoms of measles include fever, a runny nose, cough, red eyes and a skin rash.
