Construction work has commenced on 1,190 housing units in Hulhumalé Phase 2 under the government’s ‘Housing for All’ policy.

The project is being implemented by BML Affordable Home Leasing Private Limited, a subsidiary of the Bank of Maldives, and has been contracted to Beijing Urban Construction Group.

A ceremony was held on Monday night in Hulhumalé to mark the start of the project. The event was attended by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and officials from the government, BML and the contractor.

The foundation stone was laid by Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib, Chinese Ambassador Wang Lixin and representatives of the project partners.

The project forms part of a wider programme to develop more than 3,000 housing units in the Greater Malé Region.

Other projects currently under construction include 1,224 units in Hulhumalé Phase 2 contracted to China Machinery Engineering Corporation, 300 units in Vilimalé contracted to Rasheed Carpentry and Construction, and 182 units in Hulhumalé Phase 1 contracted to FW Construction.

With the addition of the current project, construction has begun on 2,896 housing units this month.

The President’s Office stated that the foundation stone for the remaining 364 units will be laid separately.

The government aims to complete the housing programme by August 2028.
